Project Background and Purpose

Schizophrenia patients report multiple challenges with everyday living and impaired quality of life. Schizophrenia impairs thought processes, patterns, perceptions, emotional patterns, and social interactions, with severely disabling symptoms if not well managed. The project adopted the Iowa model to guide intervention implementation. It involved 50 Schizophrenia patients diagnosed per the ICD-10 criteria, between 18 and 65 years, and receiving treatment for the last six months. Acutely psychotic patients were excluded. In conclusion, Schizophrenia is a disabling disease that impacts an individual’s ability to live normally and lead a quality life. Most Schizophrenia patients depend on others for daily living activities, limiting their ability to self-manage, including adhering to treatment. Additionally, the mental, emotional, and psychological impairment due to Schizophrenia leads to a loss of interest in treatment and self-management, with patients reporting that they believe their medication is no longer helpful.

Patients also express concerns that their medication is poisoning them and intentionally stop taking it after some time. However, lack of treatment leads to adverse patient outcomes, including increased readmission rates, longer hospital stays, comorbidities, and death in worst-case scenarios. Therefore, addressing medication non-adherence in this patient population is imperative to improve patient outcomes, treatment success, and quality of life. Results indicate that motivational interviewing effectively improved medication adherence, as evidenced by increased necessity for treatment and reduced concerns about treatment. Nurses can adopt motivational interviewing to help improve patient’s interest and engagement in their treatment, leading to better health outcomes and quality of life. I hope to publish my manuscript in a peer-reviewed journal and present my findings at the ANA conference in October to influence and inform clinical practice.
