Nurse Shortage Discussion

Nurses are instrumental tenets that contribute to patient care in different healthcare settings. Despite being the largest workforce, the nursing profession continues to encounter a significant shortage of nursing staff. The nursing shortage has become a threat to global healthcare systems and has reached a warning threshold. Consequently, the nursing shortage is evident when there needs to be more nursing staff to offer the required care and fill the budgetary allocations and vacant positions. The nursing shortage is a multifaceted and complex phenomenon that affects healthcare outcomes negatively (Nurse Shortage Discussion).

Aging populations across the world call for the need for an increased healthy workforce. For instance, the United States has the highest number of people over 65. Therefore, the increased demand for health services surpasses the nursing workforce’s ability to offer the required care levels (Haddad et al., 2022). Increased demand for nursing services more than the readily available workforce predisposes nurses to burnout and other work-related stress causing high turnover rates.

High turnover rates significantly reduce the number of professionals available to meet increasing healthcare demands. The aging nursing workforce contributes to the nursing shortage. The aging workforce implies that nursing training institutions should train new talents to replace the older generations. Nursing faculties are also limited from enrolling student numbers that will meet the increasing demands of the nursing workforce due to poor staffing. The majority of the nursing staff are females. Female nurses leave the demanding profession temporarily or permanently after childbearing to balance their careers and families (Nurse Shortage Discussion).

One of the most effective strategies to curb the nursing shortage is an expansion of education opportunities for more people to enroll in nursing training institutions. Consequently, the profession is increasing the scope of practice for nurses to promote professional development and job satisfaction (Halcomb & Bird, 2020). Moreover, the profession also offers education incentives such as scholarships to improve enrolment in nursing careers. The profession collaborates with the government to formulate policies that promote adequate staffing and better working conditions. Of importance, the profession champions the government to allocate more resources that promote the nursing practice (Nurse Shortage Discussion).
