| The principles of autonomy, non-maleficence, beneficence, justice, and fairness have their unique significance in medical practice and decision making (Principles of Medical Ethics, 2019). Every principle has its significance, but Christians tend to put more weight on some than others. According to the Christian worldview, autonomy seems to be the most vital of the principles. Autonomy allows individuals to make decisions uncoerced.(Healing and Autonomy Case Study Comprehensive Nursing Paper Example) Every healthcare practitioner should respect a patient’s autonomy (Parsapoor et al., 2014). The Bible provides that God created people, and they have the power to choose between right and wrong. People seem to choose what is good for them, although God does not agree with most of their decisions. This power of decision-making is similar in the medical field. In this case, Mike and Joanne decide to forego the dialysis, rely on God, and wait for a miracle. Although the physician knows that dialysis is the best option, he does not influence their decision since he should respect the patient’s autonomy. Christians are also required not to harm others by following God’s commandments. Non-maleficence is the second-most weighted principle. God’s commandments guide the Christians’ moral judgment. In Genesis, Cain kills his brother Abel, which is wrong and sinful. Christians should love and protect each other, ensuring no harm. Doing what is right according to the Bible prevents harm to others. Therefore, beneficence is the third-most vital principle. In this case, relying on faith is a good thing, but dialysis would be the right thing. The case shows two worldviews contradict. However, many Christians consider caring for the sick as a ministry, and dialysis and kidney transplant would be the right things to help James recover his wellness. Some Christians refuse medical treatment since they consider it a showcase of little faith (Black, 2006). The Bible teaches Christians to respect the legal authority and the constitution, which ensure justice and fairness. Christians are expected to obey earthly laws and rules. Mike and Joanne consider relying on faith after the first visit. However, the Bible teaches that faith without action is dead. Christians should consider medical practices as a ministry. In Mark 2:17, Jesus says, “Those who well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick. James’ condition requires immediate medical attention. Christians should not harm others and should do what is right. James’ health problem is a matter between life and death. Dialysis and the kidney transplant would help improve James’ quality of life. Mike’s decision to rely on faith led to harm. It was not the right thing to do considering the immediate circumstance.
