Personal Reflections as a Human Service Professional

A human services professional is dedicated to assisting individuals and groups in reaching their full potential. To understand people as individuals and as members of a community or society, a human services professional must have various skills and knowledge. As a human service professional, I think I can have the most positive impact at an elementary school with a larger population of at-risk students. The paper focuses on the risk and resiliency factors that I would be more interested in addressing.(Reflections as a Human Service Professional Essay)

The term at-risk is frequently used to characterize students or groups of learners who are thought to be at a greater risk of academic failure or dropping out. It is also used to describe students facing difficulties that may threaten their ability to finish school (Herbers et al., 2019). Risk factors are, for the most part, situational rather than innate. A student’s risk perception status is infrequently related to their capacity to learn or achieve academically, except for certain factors such as learning impairments (Herbers et al., 2019). It is largely or entirely dependent on a student’s life circumstances.(Reflections as a Human Service Professional Essay)

One of the risk factors I am highly interested in is physical and learning disabilities. Despite having the adequate cognitive and sensory ability, children with learning disabilities experience considerable difficulties in reading, writing, and arithmetic (Herbers et al., 2019). Some of the issues children with learning disabilities go through include word identification, word decoding skills, and reading comprehension (Herbers et al., 2019)(Reflections as a Human Service Professional Essay). Boys are more likely than girls to suffer from learning impairments. Learning difficulties can be caused by several circumstances, such as low birth weight. Learning disabled students experience low academic achievement, anxiety, and a lot of stress (Herbers et al., 2019). They have more social, emotional, and behavioral issues than children who don’t have learning disabilities. Learning impairments contribute to exam failure if not addressed early on, and these youngsters may acquire stress-related conditions. As a result, all children with learning difficulties should be tested scientifically as soon as possible to rule out learning disabilities (Herbers et al., 2019). Children’s learning issues can be successfully treated by offering scientific guidance and intense one-on-one remedial instruction from human service professionals.(Reflections as a Human Service Professional Essay)

The fundamental goal of a human service professional is to help people and communities function as efficiently as possible in the crucial areas of their lives; this explains my goals and objective as a human service professional (Liu, 2017). Dealing with various sorts of stress and overcoming trauma or adversity in difficult times is known as resilience(Reflections as a Human Service Professional Essay). Resilient people heal faster and more completely from trouble, and they may even come out of a crisis relatively undamaged (Herbers et al., 2019). The resilient factors that I am majorly interested in are community-based. The first resilient factor that I would strive to build for at-risk students is positive school experiences such as play therapy and creating a supportive relationship with the children (Liu, 2017). Play therapy is a type of treatment mainly aimed at children. As a human service professional, it would be my role to help a child investigate life events that may impact current situations in this type of treatment (Liu, 2017). I’d do it at the child’s pace and in their preferred style, mainly through play but also through basic conversation.(Reflections as a Human Service Professional Essay)

I am very excited about working with children in elementary school. I have an immense love for children, especially children going through rough situations, because I know nothing cannot get solved. I get satisfied when I use my skills and abilities to transform people into a better version of themselves. It takes patience and understanding to deal with kids, but kids have a special place in my heart that makes it easier for me.(Reflections as a Human Service Professional Essay)
