Practicum Activities Reflection

Over the past weeks, I have been training and educating members on the revised Intimate Person Violence Policy for The Medical Assistant in the medical office building. In updating and improving the policy, I looked into the approach and questions used by medical assistants when interacting with members, especially when they roomed themselves. Since the revision also included updated procedures for the proper documentation of the member’s electronic medical records, the training also engaged the MA on the specific actions to take during documentation. Furthermore, I also examined and trained the strategies that help the medical assistant room the patient alone when the family member or person escorting them refuses to allow the member to be roomed alone. Besides, the policy has a guideline for the physicians, Nurse Practitioners, or Physician Assistant procedure for reporting IPV, necessitating a training session with these members. During the training on the revised policy, I focused on what the medical assistant is supposed to do when a member comes in to see their primary care physician. Improved healthcare collaboration is among the main tactics for healthcare reform (Bosch & Mansell, 2018). Collaboration in healthcare has enhanced patient outcomes, including lowering morbidity and death rates, eliminating avoidable adverse drug responses, and optimizing prescription dosages (Bosch & Mansell, 2018). Healthcare professionals have also been demonstrated to benefit from teamwork, which has been shown to decrease excess work and boost job satisfaction.

Interprofessional collaboration among doctors, nurses, and other healthcare team members raises general awareness of the knowledge and abilities of each other (Busari et al., 2018). Additionally, the continual enhancement of collective decision-making helps improve the quality of care (Busari et al., 2018). The ability of nurses and doctors to communicate effectively is a crucial component of interprofessional collaboration and, consequently, of ensuring the quality of care. During the two-week practicum, I trained the MA and the physicians on the updated Intimate Partner Violence policy.
