Practices of Culturally Sensitive Care-Nursing Examples

This week’s reflective journal focused on practices of culturally sensitive care and ensuring the integrity of human dignity in the care of all patients. I learned that sensitive and cultural care is a significant component of patient-centered, care. As such, nurses and other healthcare professionals should meet diverse patient populations’ cultural and social needs. My preceptor emphasized that the first strategy before learning about different cultures is identification and awareness of own cultural beliefs, practices and biases. Thus, self-comprehension and reflection allow healthcare providers to create a caring environment that is adaptive and sensitive to patients’ cultures (Brottman et al., 2020) (Practices of Culturally Sensitive Car-Nursing Examples)

During my practicum, my major strengths have been empathizing with patients at all times and engaging them and their family members in making care decisions. I have also used a translation app on my phone to give patients healthcare information in their native language. One of my major weaknesses is that sometimes I get frustrated with patients’ cultural practices and beliefs that hinder care delivery and end up judging them. However, I have learned to respect the diversity and inclusion of all patients from my preceptor. I also learned about promoting the integrity of human dignity in care delivery (Practices of Culturally Sensitive Care-Nursing Examples).

Ensuring human dignity is one of the ethical principles of the APA code of ethics (Bloch et al., 2022). Thus, nurses should respect their patients and promote autonomy and privacy. My major strength in promoting human dignity is communicating with my patients and listening to their views, thus promoting positive nurse-patient relationships, which improves health outcomes. On the other hand, I encourage integrity by being honest with myself and others (Practices of Culturally Sensitive Care-Nursing Examples).

For instance, if I make mistakes, I own them and learn to make better decisions in the future. I also learned that health leaders must promote cultural diversity and human dignity among their staff and patients. They can achieve this by hiring employees from different cultural backgrounds and offering all patients equal access and fair treatment. They should also act as role models by treating patients and their staff with dignity and respect for a conducive work healthcare environment and improved health outcomes (Practices of Culturally Sensitive Care-Nursing Examples).
