Nursing Interventions for Natural Disasters

Nursing Intervention related to the Catastrophic Earthquake in Haiti in 2010

Nursing interventions include actions or initiatives nurses undertake to help patients achieve their healthcare objectives. Critical thinking and experience are imperative for nurses to develop informed interventions that are most appropriate for patients and others in need of nursing services. The Catastrophic earthquake in Haiti in 2010 affected more than three million people, and about 220,000 people died. Most were injured, requiring medical assistance, with nurses at the forefront. Based on this incidence, all levels of nursing intervention, including primary, secondary, and tertiary prevention, were used during and after the disaster (Blutcher et al., 2018). Primary prevention involves developing strategies to reduce the damage from the earthquake. At this level, nurses can activate disaster plans in their hospitals to provide emergency treatment for the injured to reduce the death resulting from the disaster. Secondary prevention entails initiatives to detect a condition before it occurs and intervene earlier. Nurses can be involved in emergency response activities like searching and rescuing, response to mass-casualty, controlling possible diseases, and responding to hazardous materials. Tertiary prevention involves managing an already established condition in an individual to prevent further complications. Nursing interventions at this level can include reducing injury severity and vulnerability to minimize the risk of additional complications or disability.(Nursing-Interventions for Natural-Disasters Essay Example)

Phase of the Disaster that the Proposed Interventions Fall

The proposed interventions are under the response phase of the disaster. This phase entails activities to respond by providing services, equipment, and personnel to manage the disaster and help those affected, possibly reducing the impacts of the disaster (Neal, 2017). Communities and individuals begin to take action to help the affected individual through interventions like emergency response, search and rescue, injury treatment, and efforts to reduce the effects of hazardous materials. Nurses are involved mostly in this phase to help those injured and who need medical help. They help rescue people from immediate danger and stabilize their physical and emotional wellbeing.(Nursing-Interventions for Natural-Disasters Essay Example)

Agencies that will help facilitate the Proposed Interventions

Nurses can work with the American Red Cross, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), and the Swedish International Development Corporation Agency (SIDA) to respond to the disaster (Coppola, 2016). These agencies work to minimize the impact of natural disasters internationally. Therefore, they can appropriately assist nurses in developing and implementing interventions to help the affected individuals in Haiti.(Nursing-Interventions for Natural-Disasters Essay Example)
