Response to SM (Healthcare Technology-Nursing Paper Examples)

Hello, SM.

Thank you for the great post. Technology is part of human creation, and its accuracy and effectiveness depend on the accuracy of those utilizing it. For instance, most medication errors in computerized provider order entry are linked to human factors, including forgetting specific patient details, entering the wrong data, or ignoring vital information (Carayon & Hoonakker, 2019). I agree that providers should understand the impact of human errors to increase awareness of their occurrence to mitigate them successfully (Healthcare Technology-Nursing Paper Examples).

Most human errors are unintentional, and others are associated with an individual’s capacity or ability to utilize technology. For instance, a novice nurse has less experience with electronic health records and is more likely to make errors. I concur that training, system thinking, and memory aids are effective strategies for addressing human errors in technology use. I like your personal experience because I can relate to and have observed in the work environment (Healthcare Technology-Nursing Paper Examples).

Hi, TL.

I liked your post for its attention to detail and clarity. I agree that technology makes work easier. It increases the efficiency and effectiveness of healthcare processes. Healthcare technologies like electronic health records and clinical decision-support systems are shown to improve the quality of care and patient safety. However, the same technologies are associated with patient safety issues primarily due to human factors rather than system problems. Providers are well-intentioned to provide the best care possible (Healthcare Technology-Nursing Paper Examples).

However, human factors like burnout, emotional stress, distraction, and lack of motivation can lead to human errors in healthcare technologies (Morsani College of Medicine, 2021). I have observed a situation similar to the one you shared in the practice environment, and it led to polypharmacy and almost a lawsuit. Providers should be more aware of possible human factors that can contribute to human errors when using technology (Healthcare Technology-Nursing Paper Examples).

Hello,

I enjoyed reading your discussion and gained valuable insights into human factors’ contribution to human errors in technology use. You have shared a touching and concerning encounter that any provider would not want to find themselves in. It is possible to make an error when using an intelligent infusion pump. Possible consequences would include adverse drug interactions and polypharmacy that threaten patient safety. An error that increases the dose four times is significant and requires a quick and thoughtful response to ensure the patient is safe (Healthcare Technology-Nursing Paper Examples).

Your encounter was a near miss, and I appreciate the teamwork in quickly decompensating the patient. Notably, most human errors occur unintentionally due to misjudgment or miscommunication, and it is advisable to be aware of human factors that contribute to potential human errors when using technology (WHO, 2019). We learn from mistakes to improve the care environment and make it safer for patients (Healthcare Technology-Nursing Paper Examples).

Hello, KM.

Thank you for an informative and insightful discussion. Patient safety is a professional, ethical, and legal consideration for healthcare providers. Every clinical decision should prioritize patient safety, and currently, technology is used to enhance patient safety. For instance, surgical robots have increased the precision of surgical procedures, minimizing potential errors and complications. I agree that simulation-based nursing education (SBE) is increasingly integrating into academic and clinical settings, allowing nursing students to gain hands-on experience in a controlled and safe environment without involving real patients (Koukourikos et al., 2021). SBE enhances patient safety by avoiding using real humans while allowing nurses to gain the competencies and skills required to care for a real human (Healthcare Technology-Nursing Paper Examples).

Thank you for an educative and thoughtful discussion. Clinicians have a professional duty to ensure patient safety. Embracing technology remain perceived as an approach to promoting safe care because technology increases the efficiency and precision of healthcare processes and procedures. I concur that a smart IV pump remain increasingly adopted in the healthcare environment due to its association with error reduction and increased patient safety (Giuliano, 2018) (Healthcare Technology-Nursing Paper Examples).

The introduction of intravenous (IV) smart pumps with drug libraries and dosage error reduction systems (DERSs) more than a decade ago provided an approach to reducing IV medicine administration errors (Giuliano, 2018). Before the availability of IV smart pumps, all pump programming required the user to manually compute the infusion rate and then input the desired infusion rate into the pump. Because many various units of measurement remain employed in IV medicine delivery, the needed calculations are frequently difficult, increasing the potential of user mistakes (Healthcare Technology-Nursing Paper Examples).

Hello, TL.

I like your discussion, and I learned considerably about predictive algorithms and electrocardiogram machines and their association with patient safety. Predictive algorithm is a component of artificial intelligence linked to increased accuracy of clinical decisions. According to the American College of Cardiology, heart disease is a significant disease burden, contributing to about 1.87 million global deaths annually. Some deaths are attributed to complications during surgical procedures or screening. However, an electrocardiogram is safe because it eliminates the risk of electrical shock during the test (Sattar & Chhabra, 2022). I agree that an ECG is non-invasive; hence safer and painless with no major risks (Healthcare Technology-Nursing Paper Examples).
