The Food and Drug Administration considers cannabis Schedule 1 drug in the same class heroin and peyote. However, like other healthcare providers, some nurses argue that cannabis should be categorized as a Schedule II drug due to its high risk of abuse despite its medical benefits. It has been established that cannabis causes significant impairment in physiological, social, and physical functioning. Subsequently, as one acquaints oneself with the distinctions between these types of substance abuse disorders, one should be aware of the limitations of DSM-5 classifications like oversimplifying human behavior, increased risk of misdiagnosis or over-diagnosis, and some of its labels are deemed stigmatizing. Leiner & Klein (2019) aver that sudden withdrawal of any CNS- active drug could have severe and sometimes life-threatening adverse events due to established drug dependence. The contemporary mental healthcare provider should actively devise context-specific measures to help disseminate relevant information to curb the widespread misunderstanding of drug dependence and withdrawal as both are closely linked to drug abuse and addiction (Lewis-Fernández et al., 2016). Taking a comprehensive history of the patient would help the nurse distinguish between the symptoms associated with cannabis use compared to sedatives, hypnotics, and anxiolytics.
