However, Dr. Wiley’s work revealed that American commercial foods were filled with fakery, impurities, and toxins that had detrimental effects on people’s health. Wiley began a food movement to create public awareness and conduct human trials of the health effects of food impurities.[2] Wiley also called for the government to regulate and question food-manufacturing companies on food impurities. For instance, the progressive reformers went too far and pressured the people to live in a specific way. As a result, people got tired of progressive attempts to control their life and the world. The movement also failed from discrimination, as African Americans had to wait several years for civil equality. Notably, several reforms, such as alcohol prohibition, led to increased crime.
