This doctor is her primary care provider, on the recommendation of her Ob/Gyn enquiring how she could lower her high blood pressure in her second pregnancy. I also have personal experiences with African American women who have a poor history of adhering to prescribed antihypertension medication contributing to racial disparities in prevalence and complications of hypertension, particularly among minority communities of all ages. Several studies among them that of Adnikrah et al. (2020) indicate that many African American women do not adhere to the prescribed medications, and neither do they follow the recommended hypertension guidelines. Non-adherence was the case for Aisha, who, in her second pregnancy and having a family history of close family members, still thinks she is too young to worry about hypertension.(Ethnicity and Culture-comprehensive nursing paper example)
According to Brown et al. (2017), one of the best practices to improve cardiovascular health among African Americans is to use civic engagement to prove effective. These women found it appealing and acceptable. At a personal level, I would engage patients in hypertension self-management strategies using the globally accepted hypertension practice guidelines. These guidelines include hypertension diagnostic techniques, identifying the risk factors, understanding hypertension–mediated organ damage, and the lifestyle modifications the patient should consider (Unger et al., 2020). The patient should also know hypertensive disorders during pregnancy and the interventions available to her. These disorders are like pre-eclampsia and proteinuria with and without pathological edema (Shobo et al., 2020). The interventions include but are limited to training and equipping non-technical BP monitoring devices availed to village health workers in resource-poor settings.(Ethnicity and Culture-comprehensive nursing paper example)
Adhering to the prescribed antihypertensive medications and making lifestyle changes recommended for effective management of hypertension is bound to improve this patient’s quality of life and ensure she is not unnecessarily exposed to maternal mortality and morbidity attributable to hypertension.(Ethnicity and Culture-comprehensive nursing paper example)
