Your post on civil commitment in Connecticut is informative and engaging. I want to highlight the risks of civil commitment legislation to the legal process. Civil commitment imposes an involuntary treatment on patients, ignoring the individual’s right to autonomy. It involves intimidation and coercion, which violates the individual’s right to choose the treatment they need freely. In addition, forceful treatment violates the right (Borecky et al., 2019) (Discussion Replies).

The decisions to commit an individual to voluntary treatment are also made without the person’s consent, limiting their autonomy in decision-making. Besides, institutionalization violates the individual’s right to a quality life. Individuals under involuntary treatment, especially mentally ill people, are secluded and restrained, making it challenging to make social connections (Carney et al., 2019). These violations affect the legal process and dictate the law, reducing the potential for justice and future freedom of the person.

This is a great breakdown of the civil commitment process and its application in Massachusetts. I want to expand on the negative effects of civil commitment on individuals. Caspar and Joukov (2019) explain that involuntary treatment of mentally ill individuals attracts a record of care that may affect the patient economically, such as disqualifying them from job opportunities. Such individuals may find challenges getting jobs requiring security clearance and professional licenses (Discussion Replies).

Besides, it may psychologically affect the patient by increasing the risk of post-traumatic-induced stress. Individuals under civil commitment are affected by repressive anger, increasing the risk of depression. Hoge (2022) explains that some released detainees may develop aggressive behaviors due to agitation and humiliating demands like blood draws.

Also, Americans held under civil commitment may not be permitted to carry guns in the future due to fear of recurrent deviant behaviors. As a result, they may not work in law enforcement agencies (Caspar & Joukov, 2019). Therefore, there is a need to implement measures for improving patients’ experiences under civil commitment to the negative effects associated with the process (Discussion Replies).
