Culture and language have a significant impact on the student’s learning. For instance, in the case study, Larissa is from El Salvador, and the learning needs and outcomes of the student were correlated to language and culture. According to the Census Bureau’s 2019 American Community Survey, Hispanics experience an educational disadvantage in the US due to cultural transition, language differences, and often low socioeconomic status. Inevitably, most Hispanic learners may continue to report low school attainment rates, find the transition challenging, and lag behind if not well assisted by caring teachers (Marrero, 2016). Family background can explain more regarding a student’s achievement than school resources. Homelife and school performance are significant (Egalite, 2016). Family variables such as family education, family income, parents’ criminal activity, and family structure may influence student achievement. For instance, Larissa’s family lives in a three-bedroom home, and the area is congested, suggesting it is not a great environment for students who want to learn and practice writing at home. Also, her mother is in a new job, trying to build herself, and therefore, not in an economic capacity to find the best learning resources or institutions to help Larissa succeed academically.
