Describe a time when you witnessed the bystander effect. What could have been done differently so that someone helped/intervened instead? Use your textbook to form your answer.

The bystander concept was popularised by social psychologists John Darley and Bibb Latané after the infamous Kitty Genovese New York murder in 1964. The bystander effect happens when other people’s presence discourages individuals from intervening in an emergency (Rovira et al., 2021). I experienced a bystander situation last summer when having dinner in a restaurant. My younger brother and I were enjoying our mill in the evening when we noticed a younger woman having an altercation with a man. More so, who was having dinner with his friends. The lady appeared dressed inappropriately and appeared as one of the prostitutes across the street. More so, who urguably not accept no for an answer (Bystander Effect-Nursing Paper Examples).

The man slapped the lady leaving her on the floor. Moreover, a group in the restaurant gathered to see if she wakes up. After a short while, the man from the observers aids her in one of the benches in the lounge. Subsequently, after confirming she was breathing. The young lady remained unawake. However, some people claimed her faking it and threatened to pour cold water on her face.

Suddenly, my younger shouted for the people to leave the girl alone. Before I could come down, the attention shifted to us. Besides, some bystanders started asking whether we intended to remain involved. However, I claimed that we had nothing to do with it. I was reluctant to help the girl based on anticipating a negative outcome. I feared the crowd would turn against us if I protected the girl. If I requested help, I would have probably been forced to pay for the medical expenses, yet I had no extra money. The police would have interrogated me about the scenario if I had called for their help, while the girl would have gone to if she was a prostitute.

However, I believe the girl would have been helped if the restaurant’s security personnel had been called to intervene when the altercation immediately began to prevent the escalation of the situation. I wish I had intervened regardless of the outcomes. I hope to overcome the bystander effect in the future and encourage others to help by suggesting better ways to help a person in emergencies (Bystander Effect-Nursing Paper Examples).

Knowing the outcome of the Bobo Dolly Study (and the decades of research regarding social learning that followed it), what recommendations would you make to parents concerned about their children learning to become aggressive?

While anger is normal and healthy, children may struggle to manage or control their aggressive behavior. Anger and frustration can lead to disrespect, defiance, and temper tantrums when they do not deal with emotions. When not managed, children’s aggressive behaviors, such as arguing, spitting, and yelling, lead to negative social interactions, poor academic performance for children in school, and poor mental states in adolescence and adulthood (Bystander Effect-Nursing Paper Examples).

The Bobo Doll experiment is an evidence-based strategy that can be used to make recommendations for parents concerned about their children learning aggressive behaviors. The experiment’s results revealed that children exposed to violent models by observing adults acting aggressively acted aggressively when the adult model was not present (Galanaki & Malafantis, 2022). The experiment revealed that adults are role models children look up to in handling emotions such as anger (Bystander Effect-Nursing Paper Examples).

Therefore, a suitable recommendation for parents will be modeling appropriate anger management skills. The best way to teach children to manage their aggression is by showing them how to manage their emotions when triggered. The children will likely lose their temper when they watch their parents lose theirs too. However, children are likely to cope with aggression better when they observe their parents control and manage their emotions in a kind and gentle way (Bystander Effect-Nursing Paper Examples).

Besides acting as role models, parents can also teach their children healthy coping skills to deal with aggression. For instance, the parents should use words like “next time” or “walk away from your sister when you feel angry”. Parents can give their children positive rewards when they follow the set anger rules and negative ones, such as play restrictions and loss of privileges for disobeying anger management rules (Richard et al., 2021) (Bystander Effect-Nursing Paper Examples).

Parents can also teach their children healthy coping skills by engaging in calming activities such as soothing music and coloring to engage the senses that help to calm their minds and body. The children should be taught problem-solving skills that help solve problems without potential aggression. The parents can set anger rules or introduce consequences when necessary.
