The Story of an Hour Critical Response
I would completely describe Mrs. Mallard as a hard-hearted woman because of how the whole story unfolds. The Story of an Hour is based on how Mrs. Mallard received the news of the death of her husband. Her sister, Josephine, did not want to break the news because it is always hard to break the information concerning the demise of a loved one to their loved ones (Chopin, 2018).
First, I think Mrs. Mallard is hard-hearted because of her first reaction after receiving the news. As opposed to how women receive notice of the death of their spouses, with numbness and disbelief, the woman weeps at once with wild abandonment (Chopin, 2018). After that, she proceeds to her room, where she stays alone without any company.
The subsequent events show that she might have thought about the situation and even tried to come to terms with it. From the story, one can tell that Mrs. Mallard is a young woman. The second event that is proof enough that she is hard-hearted is that she feels free because of the death of her husband. People mourn differently, but that is not a typical reaction.

Mrs. Mallard only thinks of how the death of her husband brings about her freedom. She is relieved because she feels like moving forward; she does not have to answer to anyone. Mrs. Mallard believes that she will now begin to live life on her terms (Chopin, 2018). It feels as if her marriage confined her, and now that Mr. Mallard was not in the picture, she felt liberated.
We do not see her mourning or showing any feeling of self-pity; Mrs. Mallard mostly thinks about her freedom and how the rest of her years would be without her husband (Chopin, 2018). It seems like she is okay with the death as if it was something that she anticipated which explains why I strongly feel like Mrs. Mallard is hard-hearted.
