For your discussion this week, consider what the text and the primary sources for Chapter 20, the Tomes chapter on the Gospel of Germs, and the documentary on the Poison Squad say about the motives for reform among Progressives reformers. How did their efforts seek to ameliorate the most negative effects of industrialization, urbanization, and unregulated capitalism? What were the shortcomings/failures of the movement?”

The Rise of Progressivism-Sample Solution

The progressivism era from the 1890s to 1920s marks an important period in the United States’ history that fought and worked to fix its problems. During the progressive era, progressives addressed the issues triggered by rapid urbanization, industrialization, and immigration. Progressive reformers aimed to use the federal government’s power to eliminate unethical business, corruption, and the negative social effects of industrialization.[1]In addition, they aimed to protect people from consuming unhealthy food while enlightening people on strategies to prevent diseases. Moreover, the late 19th century saw the United States’ second industrial revolution, which led to the growth of the coal, steel, and rail industries. People consolidated in urban areas to offer labor in the industries. The migration and consolidation of people led to a change in the American diet as food-manufacturing industries emerged to supply enough food. However, Dr. Wiley’s work revealed that American commercial foods were filled with fakery, impurities, and toxins that had detrimental effects on people’s health. Wiley began a food movement to create public awareness and conduct human trials of the health effects of food impurities.[2] Wiley also called for the government to regulate and question food-manufacturing companies on food impurities. Wiley’s work led to the first consumer protection law in U.S. history.(Rise of Progressivism Essay-Sample)

Consequently, Tome’s work on the Gospel of Germs showed how domestic reformers educated women on domestic science to improve hygiene and prevent diseases. In addition, the domestic reformers focused on new food hygiene, such as proper storage and covering food to keep away dirt and microorganisms. Finally, domestic reformers recruited large numbers of informed home markers to use their sanitary standards, make purchases, and participate in political actions to extend their influence.[3] However, the progressive movement had notable shortcomings. For instance, the progressive reformers went too far and pressured the people to live in a specific way. As a result, people got tired of progressive attempts to control their life and the world. The movement also failed from discrimination, as African Americans had to wait several years for civil equality. Notably, several reforms, such as alcohol prohibition, led to increased crime. Thus, people did not perceive progressivism as beneficial anymore.(Rise of Progressivism Essay-Sample)
