Nurse practitioners are considered critical thinkers, and they have to consider the opinions of other stakeholders, including patients and other health providers, when delivering patient care (Gafni & Charles, 2017; Meyerson et al., 2019). However, there are instances where there are judgments, biases, transference, or countertransference in the nurse-patient encounter (McCartney, 2017). I have had an encounter where I judged the patient based on her medical records in my practice. This encounter occurred when a lady was brought to the hospital after poisoning her two children and herself in an attempt to commit suicide. However, nobody knew that she was mentally unstable until she was brought to the facility. This labeling made me make judgments about her while delivering healthcare. It hurt me to see her children fight for their lives, which made me angry about the incident. It was until she recovered and cried for help, asking me among other healthcare providers on-site to work relentlessly to save her children’s lives as she did not intend to harm them in any way. While judgment towards a patient negatively affects healthcare quality, it is crucial to deal with the issue and practice professionalism to ensure effective delivery of patient care (Max, 2018). In this regard, I would assess myself to understand where the judgment was stemming from and self-reflect. I understood that I was judging her because she had hurt her children despite their innocence. Besides, the children trusted her to take care of them, but now she was the one harming them. I would also deal with the feeling and be compassionate with her because she did not perform the act willingly but rather triggered her mental problem.
