Scholars and theorists provide different definitions of exemplary leadership. As role models, leaders should portray self-empathy, self-awareness, honesty, empathy, and accountability for their behavior. Exemplary leadership entails any form that portrays appropriate and acceptable behaviour and conduct for the common good in all life aspects (Goffee & Jones, 2015). Exemplary leaders possess distinguishable traits that make them appear as role models. They portray respect for all, justice, effective communication, and honesty.(Leader as Role Model Comprehensive Nursing Paper Example)

My former manager, Mr William Johnson, is an exemplary leader who shaped my professional career. I was 23 years old when I started working with him. My age was not a hindrance, as he allowed me to express my opinions and thoughts to encourage new and innovative ideas. I remember when she told me to use “we” instead of “I” while addressing work emails to portray teamwork. I felt empowered and motivated while working alongside him. I admired his empathetic and open-minded nature that made all subordinate staff feel equal through great connection. Mr William also practiced moral leadership by treating all employees equally, with respect and dignity, regardless of religion, gender, color, race, age, and ethnicity. As per Collin’s leadership model, Mr William was a competent leader owing to his knowledge and skills to use the available resources to meet set goals. He was an effective leader who set a clear and compelling vision to stimulate high performance.(Leader as Role Model Comprehensive Nursing Paper Example)

Like exemplary leaders, Mr William fostered collaboration by promoting mutual respect among all employees regardless of their professional and personal differences. All the employees are important to exemplary leaders regardless of the hierarchy in their organization (George & McLean, 2005). The leaders do not despise different opinions but promote open discussion and conversations about sensitive issues. Another exemplary leadership portrayed by Mr William is effective communication. Exemplary leaders engage with their employees and relevant stakeholders before making decisions. The leaders value every stakeholder’s opinions rather than making decisions based on their thinking and perception. For instance, Mr William organized meetings with all the staff to inform them about sensitive issues and potential change and seek suggestions on the way forward. Of importance, honesty was a major exemplary leadership strategy adopted by Mr William. The trait gained him employees’ loyalty that fostered effective management while boosting overall performance.(Leader as Role Model Comprehensive Nursing Paper Example)

Excellent post! I support your claims that Kouzes and Posner’s five leadership model effectively shapes exemplary leadership. The model is credible as it was created after researching personal experiences about excellent leadership among different people. The model claimed that good leadership is a universal and understandable process involving five practices: “model the way, inspire a shared vision, challenge the process, enable others to act, and encourage the heart.” One strategy to model the way entails behaving in a way that portrays shared values to set an example to the employees. For example, the leaders may define shared behavioral standards of an organization and exemplify them to lead an example.(Leader as Role Model Comprehensive Nursing Paper Example)

A second strategy that you mentioned was inspiring a shared vision. In this case, the leader can envision an exciting, uplifting, and meaningful future for the employees. The shared vision should appeal to the employees’ values, hopes, interests, and dreams. One leadership theory that can inspire a shared vision is transformational leadership. The leadership style is characterized by acting as role models, remaining consistent with the company’s vision, and valuing interpersonal relationships while using inspiration to motivate the employees (Bakker et al., 2022). Moreover, challenging the process entail searching for new opportunities to improve, innovate and grow. The leader should embrace experiments, risk-taking, and learning from mistakes that allow the employees to flourish while dealing with diverse organizational issues.(Leader as Role Model Comprehensive Nursing Paper Example)

Subsequently, an exemplary leader should enable others to act by fostering collaboration through building trust, strengthening others’ ability to act by delegating power, offering visible support, and developing competency. Participative leadership is a suitable leadership style to encourage others to act by encouraging the employees to participate in decision-making and provide feedback (Elsetouhi et al., 2023). Participative leadership also encourages employees by recognizing their contributions and regularly praising and celebrating their accomplishments.(Leader as Role Model Comprehensive Nursing Paper Example)
