I encountered a 17-year old boy suffering from affective and anxiety disorders. The patient also reported borderline personality, eating, and behavioral disorders. He was warm, calm, and communicative, and I enjoyed every bit of our interaction. I became overly invested in his case because he reminded me of a younger me. I was interested in helping the patient and requested to continue seeing the patient in the following meetings to recover from his psychological issues. We shared many personal details and eventually opened up on how he felt alone because he has no siblings or close friends, and his separated parents are working most of the time. He was happy to interact with me and came asking for me in his subsequent visits. (Journal Reflection on Anxiety Disorders Comprehensive Nursing Paper Example)
This patient reminded me of my younger self and why I had selected this profession to help people have healthy and happy lives. Growing up, I had to move a lot, which affected my interactions with people and even my friends. I grew close to the patient because I wanted to help him to have better outcomes, live healthy and happy. I would continue to provide services to the patient because I genuinely want to help him. Besides, learning to listen to the patient helps him get better and improves my capability to nurture interactions with a patient and conduct effective follow-ups. I consider this a helpful form of countertransference because it is a case of positive emotional responsiveness that, according to Hayes et al. (2018), can help the therapist understand and support the patient better. I will ensure that my relationship with him affects the care I provide positively for optimal results.
