The Ethical and Legal Aspects of Practice Change

The proposed DNP practice change project participants are institutionalized mentally healthy patients transitioning to independent living. These are mental health patients initially diagnosed with deficits or disabilities in social and life skills and consequent inability to live independently. These individuals have spent a relatively long time in mental institutions, losing touch with the community. When deinstitutionalized, such individuals face challenges associated with managing their conditions and, re-creating social networks, resuming vocational and social roles for fruitful reintegration.(Ethical and legal aspect of nursing)

The perceived benefits of the proposed intervention are successful reintegration into the community and effective management of the potential mental health risks. The perceived risk for the DNP practice change project participants includes anxiety and depression associated with recreating social connections and the potential stigmatization and discrimination, which would likely affect effective integration into society (Knaak et al., 2017). Other risks include potential miscommunication and loss of confidentiality. The participants are not medical personnel and are likely to interpret information relative to the psychoeducation provided wrongly, depending on the level of understanding.(Ethical and legal aspect of nursing)

Researchers are expected to uphold the rights of participants as humans. Participants are entitled to the confidentiality of data, and the researcher should minimize the risk of loss of confidentiality. Only the information essential for the research activity will be collected to minimize the risk of loss of confidentiality. The data collected at baseline will be coded and securely stored, and access will only be given to the researchers. Besides, I will obscure the identity of the subjects and obtain informed consent. Furthermore, I will follow up with the participants to ensure that the psychoeducation content is based on empirical evidence and founded on existing mental health education guidelines, is well understood by the participants, and clarifications are made as soon as possible.(Ethical and legal aspect of nursing)
