Analysis of the Film: “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest – Baseball Game Scene”

The scene of the film “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest – Baseball Game Scene” contains various elements of mise-en-scene. Mise-en-scene refers to the visuals incorporated in producing the film (Lathrop & Sutton, 2008). They include lighting, composition, art direction, costuming, makeup, and texture. In this case, the scene’s lighting is naturalistic, flowing consistently with the conversations between the actors (Wiwiwi, 2013).

Such consistency is essential in expressing realism and relatable, real-life scenarios. Besides, the film commences with a silent atmosphere as Chief raises his hand before hell breaks loose and McMurphy begins shouting to attract everyone’s attention towards Chief. The silence indicates that an important function (voting) was happening in the previous minutes of the scene.

Besides, the silence accompanies Chief’s feeble appearance as he raises his hand. This shows that hope had been lost after adjourning voting with a tie, implying that Ratched would not turn on the television. However, the silence is displaced by McMurphy’s joyous effort to convince Ratchet to turn on the television, indicating rekindled hope. Moreover, the producers utilized various camera angles throughout the scene.

For example, they used a static angle to capture the conversation between McMurphy and Nurse Ratched. The static shot is necessary to capture the scene’s main character (McMurphy) (Lathrop & Sutton, 2008). Most parts of the scene utilize eye angle and Extreme close-up shots to depict the protagonists and their body language in those parts.

For example, Nurse Ratched seems furious at the cheering McMurphy cheering with fellow patients and trying to calm them down. Also, Forman’s auteur reaction shots have been used to capture the brief moment of joy and freedom as McMurphy elicits fellow patients to join him in cheering while Ratched stares from a distance. The shot depicts the tension between the nurse and the patients.

According to Lathrop and Sutton (2008), the producer uses a frame-within-frame illustration to draw viewers’ attention from the actors. It adds taste and context to the scene’s imagery, where McMurphy stares and cheers at a turned-off television screen, blanking at his reflection. This was after Ratched disappointed him, indicating that he was bored and needed attention to rekindle his wild personality. The producer also depicts two types of authority in the scene, McMurphy’s and the nurse’s authority.

McMurphy easily convinces fellow patients to cheer but still recognizes that Ratched controls the whole situation. Similarly, the producers captured a close shot of the patients cheering while confined within the middle of the room, indicating that the limits of their authority are within the rooms (Wiwiwi, 2013). In this context, McMurphy champions them into cheering loudly to affirm their authority as the Ratchet watches from a distance.

Furthermore, the patients and the nurse have contrasting characteristics. The patients are extroverts and wild, while Ratched is calm and composed, as depicted when McMurphy approaches to inform her that Chief had raised his hand and when McMurphy was cheering with other patients (Wiwiwi, 2013). He talks loudly and demands attention while the nurse is calm.

Besides, the actors are wearing white uniforms, including Nurse Rached, indicating a form of identity, except for McMurphy, who wears a white uniform on top of a blue shirt distinguishing him from other actors (Wiwiwi, 2013). The distinction indicates his personality of not desiring to share similar identification with other patients, contrasting the idea that patients may have the sense to distinguish such aspects of clothing. Wearing a similar uniform signifies unity within the facility (Lathrop & Sutton, 2008).

Finally, the themes portrayed include rebellion, whereby McMurphy and the other patients refuse to stop cheering despite Ratched’s calls urging them to stop. Another theme is social control, whereby Ratched tries hard to exercise control over the patients while McMurphy is determined to undermine her authority. The nurse also uses her position to undermine the patients by initiating a vote to determine whether or not to switch on the television.
