10-1 Discussion: Future of Social Psychology
Discussion Board Post 1
Human behavior arguably comes down to genetic factors and learned behaviors. The social neurological approach pertains to the former, observing how biology and heredity affect and individual’s psychology (Beadle & Tranel, 2011).
The sociocultural approach covers the ladder, observing how these behaviors can be viewed in a cultural context (Martin & Kirchner, 2010). These two approaches to social psychology can help unveil how these factors, combined, affect an individual in thought and behavior, and can therefore help us to better facilitate desired behaviors in society.

Looking at the cultural and social context of behavior allows us to better understand people, but also shows that psychology is not a “one-size-fits-all” venture, and may inspire researchers to use more diverse representation in studies and experiments as we continue to move forward. This would be quite a change from some of the first studies in the field, which were not very representative of the population as a whole.

Social psychology is a science of social behavior, but the emphasis is on how thought, feeling, and behavior of individuals are influenced by the actual, imagined, or implied presence of others (Cacioppo, Bernston & Decety, 2010). Social psychology can be seen in going in one of two ways. Either neuroscience or socio-cultural perspective.
Neuroscience focus on the functions of the brain such as memory and attention. Socio-cultural perspective focuses on the way individuals interact between various social groups. Researchers over the years have noted how a person’s view is impacted by their cultural surroundings (Kirschner & Martin, 2010). Society plays a huge role on an individual’s thoughts.

Technology plays a huge in society and it is ever changing. With technology evolving I do believe it will provide a new perspective for social psychology that was not available in the past. Neuroscience helps determine what stimulates the brain and in turn those simulations determine how an individual acts. In conclusion learning about different cultures, genetics, and so forth will allow us to better understand individuals and how they develop.

Discussion Board Post 3
After completing this module’s readings, where do you see the future of social psychology going? Do you think we are heading in a different direction?
Social psychology will continue to change as we discover more about the human brain and the factors that shape the way we behave. The readings for this week focused on the two directions of social psychology. Sociocultural perspective, which “accounts for social and cultural background when explaining an individual’s thoughts, feelings and behaviors” (Martin & Kirschner, 2010). And social neuroscience, which “studies the connection between genetics and social behavior” (Beadle & Tranel, 2011).
Over time, people continue to adapt to their surroundings, which leads to different thoughts, behaviors, and feelings due to technological, engineered, and biomechanical research and advances. Time and time again, we learn one thing about the human brain, soon discovering something else, and the pattern just continues. Every generation is faced with a different socio-psychological world. What is normal to me, was not normal to my parents at my age, or their parents, and so on.

The field of psychology has adapted so much over just the last one hundred years, where will it be in one hundred more?
As time goes on, mental health disorders become more and more normal and less taboo. Even in the last ten years, the normality to discuss mental health has changed drastically. People are much more open about their mental health and the support in receiving and giving help. We look less and less at people with mental health challenges as abnormal, and realize that more than 50% of the human population suffers from some sort of mental health issue.
Additionally, ethics in the social psychological world have become more appropriate in order to protect the human participants. What was once acceptable in social psychological research, may not be acceptable today. Say Zimbardo’s Stanford Prison Experiment. The methods of his research were questionable during the 1970s at the time of the experiment; however, today they would be absolutely unacceptable.

How can we use the sociocultural perspective and social neuroscience to help improve our social well-being or social welfare?
As time goes on and more research is completed, we are able to use the sociocultural perspective and social neuroscience to help improve our social well-being or social welfare. The sociocultural perspective allows us to gain insight into the human brain and how humans think, feel and behave as individuals. It also allows us different insight into cultures and social groups and helps to create rules to help promote and manage positive behaviors and habits within a culture or location (Martin & Kirschner, 2010).
While the sociocultural perspective focuses on the social and cultural side of things, social neuroscience focuses on genetic factors and their relation to social behaviors. Neuroscience also helps to determine what stimulates the brain in certain situations and how those simulations determine how we outwardly behave (Beadle & Tranel, 2011). Learning about these different cultures, genetics, groups, etc allows us to better understand human beings and how they develop over time.
