The interview is based on a conversation between a counselor and a college student. The setting is in a school. The counselor is an experienced professional who has been in practice for over a decade. The counselor mainly deals with students and helps them navigate the common issues young adults go through in life. The student in the interview was advised to start counseling classes because they recently lost a parent. The student, Mark, has a close relationship with the deceased parent, and it has been affecting his studies. He is a brilliant student, but at the moment, his grades have been deteriorating.
- Counselor 1: Good morning Mark, how are you this morning?
- Mark: I am fine, Madam; thank you for asking.
- Counselor 2: How have you been, and how are your studies?
- Mark: I have not been okay, but I am trying to be alright despite everything happening in my life. School is fine, and currently, I have been trying to work on my grades because they have been low for quite some time now.
- Counselor 3: I like your openness, Mark. I need to let you know that whatever we talk about here is completely confidential.
- Mark: Thank you for the assurance, Madam.
- Counselor 4: So, tell me more about what has been happening in your life.
- Mark: I lost my mom a few weeks ago, and life has not been easy. Life has also not been the same; it took an extraordinary turn.
- Counselor 5: I am sorry for your loss Mark. My condolences. How is everything at home?
- Mark: Thank you. Our home has felt empty since my mother died. The house feels cold and empty. At the moment, everyone is just trying to deal with the pain in their way.
- Counselor 6: How have you been dealing with the emotions and the mixed feelings?
- Mark: I honestly do not know whether I have been dealing with the pain or the emotions because I do not want to feel it. The pain is too intense, and it overwhelms me. I prefer running away from it.
- Counselor 7: Tell me more.
- Mark: I try not to think about the whole situation. I try to bury the memories of the fateful days at the very back of my mind because I want freedom; I do not want to get consumed by the pain.
- Counselor 8: Could that be the reason why you have been involved in two incidents in school.
- Mark: Yes. I felt like I needed an escape, and the drugs sounded like a perfect escape.
- Counselor 9: Do you think you are entirely dependent on the drugs now.
- Mark: I would not say so.

- Counselor 10: Okay. Mark, you need to understand that whatever you are feeling is valid. Grief is never easy, and it has never been easy. Everyone deals with grief differently, and I am glad that you agreed to attend these counseling sessions. I will try and help you come to terms with the situation. I am willing to walk with you through this journey, and I believe that you will be okay.
- Mark: Thank you, Madam.
Analysis
The first micro skill is attending behavior. Attending behaviors encourage clients to speak out and demonstrate that the counselor is paying attention to what they are saying, as shown in the counselor’s seventh response (Hambly & Bomford, 2018). Questioning is also a micro skill used in the interview. Effective asking aids in the direction of the counseling conversation and can help to deepen the client’s story, as shown in the counselor’s second and fourth response.
Accurate Responding permits the counselor to ensure that the client is heard appropriately (Hambly & Bomford, 2018). The counselor demonstrated accurate answers in the last reply. Note-taking and reflection are done to bring forth inner thoughts. The counselor utilizes this skill in the sixth response.
The counselor can uncover gaps or inconsistencies in the client’s or their communication through skillful client observation. Confrontation is a technique that can help clients become more aware of themselves (Kulzer & Beck, 2018). It can be used to draw attention to inconsistencies that clients were blissfully ignorant of.
A counselor can use focusing on guiding a client’s conversation into specific topics. In this case, the counselor guides the conversation from the start to the end (Kulzer & Beck, 2018). It may be able to persuade a client to think or behave in a certain way. When a client is contemplating new ways of thinking or action, influence is usually used.
The first step of this interview involves relationship building. The conversation starts with greetings and a simple conversation. The counselor and the client have to be comfortable with each other for a free discussion (Millar et al., 2017). The second step involves assessing the problem where the counselor asks leading questions and the student answers all of them.
The student shares the pain he is going through and briefly explains how he is coping. The third step is goal setting which is evident in the last response of the counselor, where she explains to Mark the help she will offer (Millar et al., 2017). The fourth step is counseling intervention which starts when the counselor begins to guide Mark. The last step is constantly monitoring and evaluating.
