Electronic Medication Administration With Barcoding Comprehensive Nursing Essay Example

Barcode Medication Administration (BCMA) is an electronic system that hospitals and medical practitioners use in medication errors prevention and efficiency enhancement. The technology is easy to implement because only a barcode scanner, printers, software, a computer server, and skilled staff are needed. Mobile computers are preferable because they operate the same as smartphones. I chose Barcode Medication Administration because it provides an innovative solution to one of the barriers to quality of care, medical errors. Medical errors have a wide range of consequences that include immature or preventable death, new conditions or medical complications, or other adverse outcomes, including hospitalization and high medical expenses. All health care team members contribute to medical errors, but most errors originate from nursing practice. Therefore, BCMA proves pivotal in enhancing the quality of nursing practice and patient outcomes. I searched the Scientific Research Publishing, Google Scholar, BMJ, and PubMed databases for scholarly and authoritative sources about BCMA. I used terms that include “Electronic medication administration with barcoding,” “Barcode Medication Administration in nursing,” and “Barcode Medication Administration and patient outcomes” during the sources’ search.(Electronic Medication Administration With Barcoding Comprehensive Nursing Essay Example)

Shah et al. (2016) review the impact of Barcode Medication Administration on patient safety when partnered with computerized prescribers and an automated dispensing system. The authors acknowledge the adverse outcomes of medication errors, such as increased hospital stay, that threaten patient safety despite widespread staff training and education on medication administration. The article provides that BCMA systems are an effective solution to medical errors. BCMA systems can electronically verify the five patients’ rights: right patient, right dose, right drug, right time, and right route. The authors also assess barriers to BCMA technology adoption, such as lack of evidence about BCMA effectiveness in reducing medical errors, particularly in hospitals that already have computerized prescriber order entry (CPOE) (Electronic Medication Administration With Barcoding Comprehensive Nursing Essay Example)and automated dispensing devices (ADDs). The findings indicate that BCMA minimizes the absolute rate of non-timing errors. They also conclude that BCMA integration in care significantly reduced potentially significant drug events deemed as life-threatening. Noncompliance with medical charting also improved after BCMA implementation. This study proves vital to the research topic for its extensive evidence on the BCMA effectiveness in medical error reduction. The study is current and peer-reviewed, strengthening its relevance, validity, and reliability. This article is authoritative as the authors are affiliated with various medical fields and Universities. For instance, Kieran Shah is affiliated with Fraser Health Authority, Burnaby, British Columbia, giving and has a bachelor’s degree in pharmacy, elevating authority to address the topic.     (Electronic Medication Administration With Barcoding Comprehensive Nursing Essay Example)

Truitt, E., Thompson, R., Blazey-Martin, D., NiSai, D., & Salem, D. (2016). Effect of the Implementation of Barcode Technology and an Electronic Medication Administration Record on Adverse Drug Events. Hospital pharmacy, 51(6), 474–483. https://doi.org/10.1310/hpj5106-474(Electronic Medication Administration With Barcoding Comprehensive Nursing Essay Example)

In the study, Truitt et al. (2016) evaluate the impact of barcode technology and electronic medication administration record implementation on adverse drug events (ADEs). It acknowledges the move by many healthcare organizations to invest in new technologies and the need for research to determine the efficacy of these technologies. The authors assessed the ADEs conditions before and after implementing the barcode medication administration (BCMA)(Electronic Medication Administration With Barcoding Comprehensive Nursing Essay Example) and electronic medication administration record (eMAR) to determine any reduction in the ADEs rate within medication stages. They also explored the severity of medical errors and changes in the distributions of different error types. The study’s findings indicate a significant decrease in the rate of ADEs post-implementation, highly attributed to “wrong time” errors. The study is relevant to the research topics as it offers statistical and concrete evidence on the impact of BCMA technology implementation on ADEs. The study is peer-reviewed and current, adding to its credibility, validity, and relevance. The authors are affiliated with Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, West Campus, giving them the authority to address the topic. (Electronic Medication Administration With Barcoding Comprehensive Nursing Essay Example)

Mulac et al. (2021) explore the use of barcode medication administration technology in hospital practice. The authors emphasize the need to properly implement barcode medication administration (BCMA), which otherwise can lead to disrupted workflow, increased workload, and medication errors. The study analyzes further the reasons for BCMA policy deviations. The study aims to get insights into barcode technology integration into nursing practice when dispensing and to administer medication. The findings indicate the need for work system adaptations,(Electronic Medication Administration With Barcoding Comprehensive Nursing Essay Example) explicitly relating to policies and technology to optimize nurses’ BCMA use in dispensing and administering medication. The adaptation should result in improved patient safety. The study provides vital evidence on the BCMA use in nursing practice and why a proper implementation is required to elevate effectiveness and minimize unwanted consequences. The study is scientifically relevant as it increases the understanding of BCMA systems used in medication administration. It is also peer-reviewed, increasing credibility, validity, and appropriateness to the specific topic. (Electronic Medication Administration With Barcoding Comprehensive Nursing Essay Example)

Recommendation

The research studies are relevant and appropriate to the research topic, electronic medication administration with barcoding. The research paper will integrate evidence and insights from these studies to support the need for BCMA in clinical practice to minimize medical errors and improve patient safety outcomes. The studies provide evidence of how BCMA helps reduce medical errors, especially wrong timing errors. They also offer vital information that shows the need for proper implementation of BCMA, which otherwise can worsen medical errors, increase workloads, and disrupt workflows. All new technologies are disruptive, necessitating the need for proper implementation. Various organization factors, including organization policies, administration, culture, financial and human resources, employee commitment, training, and empowerment, influence the choice of a technology to implement in a healthcare organization. Attitude to use, facilitating conditions, perceived usefulness, and expected ease of use also influence technology selection and successful implementation. Healthcare technology, such as the BCMA, should be implemented in a clinical environment to improve patient safety, reduce medical errors, and reduce adverse drug reactions (Naidu & Alicia, 2019; Mulac et al., 2021; Shah et al., 2016). Technologies also help enhance compliance with organizational and professional guidelines and policies. Technology is a powerful tool in improving healthcare services quality and safety and facilitating interdisciplinary collaboration for higher productivity, job satisfaction, and reduced turnover.(Electronic Medication Administration With Barcoding Comprehensive Nursing Essay Example)
