Prevalence of Disabilities in America

Disability refers to the impairment of the body or mind, making it challenging for the individual to do certain activities like walking independently. Prevalent disabilities include physical, visual, hearing, intellectual, and cognitive impairment. According to the 2020 census, approximately 1 in 4 adults (26%) in the U.S. are affected by some form of disability (CDC, 2020). Among these, 13.7% have mobility problems, and 10.8% have a cognitive disability. Those who suffer from independent living, hearing, vision, and self-care disabilities account for 6.8%, 5.9%, 4.6%, and 3.7%, respectively. These figures indicate an increase from the 2010 census, which showed that 18.7% of the adult population were disabled. Consequently, Young (2021) observe that over 4.3% of the country’s population under 18 also live with a disability, which is a 0.4% increase from the 2008 census.(Disabilities in America Essay Example)

Notably, Pinilla-Roncancio (2018) observes that low-income levels are a risk factor for disability in the U.S. It results in the loss of employment, increased expenses in caring for the disabled, and hinders education and skill development. Americans with Disability Act (ADA) (1990) aims to curb the impacts of disabilities like employment discrimination (ADA, 2022). The regulation effectively protects the rights of disabled people by providing them with opportunities in public and private entities.(Disabilities in America Essay Example)

 Finding Facts and ascertaining Credibility

It is sometimes challenging to find facts and ascertain their credibility during research. Largan and Morris (2019) explain that researchers can find facts from a government website, peer-reviewed journals, non-fiction books, and periodicals. These sources of information provide reliable references when solving problems. To ascertain their credibility, the researcher should consider the most current sources whose authors or organizations have the authority to speak about the topic, such as the CDC (Largan & Morris, 2019). Besides, they can also consider sources sponsored by educational institutions or advocacy groups. Lastly, the sources must be relevant to the research topic.(Disabilities in America Essay Example)
