Barriers to the treatment and management of pain limit the availability of pain care and contribute to health disparities. Gaps in knowledge of pain and its management are one of the key challenges in treating pain. The IOM report advocates for the education of health professionals on pain, and its causes, and the public on pain aspects (Pizzo et al., 2011).

Furthermore, this would help alienate clinician barriers such as inadequate assessment skills, attitudes towards prescriptions, and under-treatment of pain. Educating the public by providing sufficient pain management material is also essential as it helps eliminate communication, psychological, and attitudinal issues, especially during pain assessment and medication. Also, to effectively prevent, treat, and manage pain, research challenges have to be lifted through funding, provision of guidelines, and the coordination of institutions leading pain research.

Pharmacologic pain treatment aims to reduce sensitization, decrease pain amplification, and restore pain thresholds (Varrassi et al., 2010). The main medications are NSAIDs and opioids. The agents are recommended for short term pain management and at lower doses. The drawbacks, however, are in the severe side effects and inadequate pain management. Furthermore, the risks for drug-to-drug interactions are elevated.

On the other hand, non-pharmacologic methods (NPM) are best recommended for long term pain management. NPM is linked to reduced anxiety and stress, and a decrease in pain behavior and focused pain level while providing a sense of control and relief (El Geziry et al., 2018). The benefits include reduced dependence on medication, and most interventions are safe.

The drawbacks include access barriers such as out of pocket costs, poor NPM awareness and skepticism on effectiveness and rationale, and lack of support from the healthcare system. While the selection of the best intervention lies in the patient, it is imperative to understand both NPMs and pharmacologic interventions.
