Recent Experience in My Practicum

Working in an urgent care facility, I have recently encountered a 20-year-old female with Infectious mononucleosis, commonly known as mono. She complained of feeling tired, sore throat, body and headache, swollen lymph nodes on armpits and neck, and rash skin. Based on these symptoms, I guessed she had infectious mononucleosis (Cai et al., 2021).

Describe the Thoughts and Feelings

I further probed her recent experiences to ensure I made the right diagnosis. She was in her second year of college and had recent sexual intercourse with a male she had bumped into a party. However, she claims to have used protection but may have gotten an infection through kissing. I was proud that she used protection, especially because she was drunk and unsure of the other partner’s health status. She was also cooperative and was not ashamed of sharing her experience, making it easier to diagnose her.

Situation Evaluation

Based on the symptoms presented and her recent sexual interactions, the patient suffered from infectious mononucleosis. These symptoms appeared three days ago, which means she was in an incubation period of approximately four weeks (Rostgaard et al., 2019). However, I decided to conduct a blood test to confirm the diagnosis.

Analysis

The white blood cell count indicated that there was an increase in lymphocytes. The blood test indicated an infection, confirming the patient’s condition (Rostgaard et al., 2019).

Conclusion and Learning

Infectious mononucleosis is caused by the Epstein-Barr virus, which is spread through saliva (Cai et al., 2021). In this regard, one may get the infection from kissing or sharing drinks or foods. In some cases, it may be spread through semen during sexual contact, blood transfusion, or organ transplants. In this regard, the patient had infectious mononucleosis. Additionally, complications may occur if the condition is left untreated. These complications include anemia, hepatitis, jaundice, meningitis, and myocarditis (Li et al., 2018).

Action Plan

The main objective of the treatment was to avoid complications that may adversely affect the patient’s health. Therefore, I prescribed ibuprofen to relieve fever, headache, and muscle aches (Rostgaard et al., 2019). I also recommended the patient use throat lozenges, hydrate, and rest to ease the symptoms.
