The ability to listen is crucial in all elements of group counseling. Listening is an active process in which a counselor makes sense of what they hear, evaluates it, and responds. Receiving is the first phase of the listening process, which entails hearing and paying attention. The next stage is the understanding process. A counselor has to be intentional about understanding what is being said by the group.
