Emotional Influence on Professionalism Journal Entry Example

Describe a scenario of when emotion influenced a personal or professional decision in your life to offer instructor some context. Then, answer the following questions:

The scenario Id like to use is finding out my son (at age 13) stole food and drink from a store. He was caught but I didn’t believe it and argued with the shop clerk, after I stormed out and defended my son I later calmed down and realized the shop owner had no reason to lie and my son may be guilty. I went back to my son and told him I was taking I’m back to the store to watch the survalience video and so he confessed. We both went back to the shop to apologize to the shop owner and my son was punished. My ego and my love of my son clouded my logical thinking and assumed he could not be guilty however, when I calmed down I realized this was an opportunity to tech him a lesson.(Emotional Influence on Professionalism Journal Entry Example)

This journal entry should reflect the concepts of critical thinking.

  • Did this emotional influence on your thinking exert a positive or negative influence?
  • Did it help or hinder your thought process?
    • If it helped you think more clearly, how so?
    • If it hindered your thought process, what could you have done to make this emotional influence a more positive and helpful one?

Consider this example:

You are offered a new job with a huge increase in pay. Your first day will be in two weeks. You are very excited and your mind jumps to all the possibilities of how your life will change with this new opportunity. This weekend you go out and buy a brand new SUV. The next day, after the excitement starts to come down, you find yourself with buyer’s remorse, and worry about being able to afford the vehicle if the job offer somehow falls through.(Emotional Influence on Professionalism Journal Entry Example)

In this situation, the excitement of the new job and pay potential hindered the thought process, potentially causing additional stress, since you haven’t started the new job yet, or received the new paycheck to confirm that you are able to afford the increased payment for the SUV. An option you could have considered is waiting until you started the job and received your first paycheck to determine if the new car payment would fit into your budget.(Emotional Influence on Professionalism Journal Entry Example)

Journal Entry – A Lesson in Critical Thinking: Unraveling the Truth

Date: [Insert Date]

Today has been an eye-opening experience that has compelled me to reevaluate my own thought processes and recognize the importance of critical thinking in my parenting journey. The incident involving my 13-year-old son stealing food and drink from a store has served as a pivotal moment, showcasing the delicate balance between love, ego, and rational thinking.(Emotional Influence on Professionalism Journal Entry Example)

Initially, when I was informed that my son had been caught stealing, my immediate reaction was one of disbelief and defensiveness. The shop clerk’s accusations seemed inconceivable to me, and I staunchly defended my son’s innocence. My emotional attachment and inherent trust in my child clouded my judgment, leading me to question the shop clerk’s motives rather than considering the plausibility of my son’s involvement. This reaction reflects the potential dangers of allowing emotions to override logical thinking, a lesson I am now learning the hard way.(Emotional Influence on Professionalism Journal Entry Example)

Upon storming out of the store, my emotions were still running high, and I was determined to protect my son at any cost. However, as time passed and I had the chance to calm down, I started to reflect on the situation more objectively. The shop owner, in all likelihood, had no reason to lie about the incident. This realization marked the first step towards acknowledging the possibility that my son might indeed be guilty. My ego and my inclination to blindly trust my child’s innocence had hindered my capacity for critical analysis in that moment.(Emotional Influence on Professionalism Journal Entry Example)

Taking this newfound insight into consideration, I decided to take my son back to the store to review the surveillance footage. This was a pivotal moment in our journey towards critical thinking. As the footage played before us, it was undeniable – my son was captured on camera committing the act. In this moment, the truth was inescapable, and my son eventually confessed to his actions. This experience provided a powerful lesson for both of us – a lesson about accountability, honesty, and the consequences of our choices.(Emotional Influence on Professionalism Journal Entry Example)

Returning to the store together to apologize to the shop owner was an essential step in this process. It not only demonstrated the importance of owning up to one’s mistakes but also showcased the significance of critical thinking in assessing situations and adjusting our viewpoints accordingly. My son’s punishment, while undoubtedly difficult for both of us, served as a crucial reminder that love does not exempt us from the need to think critically and rationally.(Emotional Influence on Professionalism Journal Entry Example)

As I reflect on this journey, I am humbled by the realization that my own ego and emotions can easily blind me to the truth. This experience serves as a profound reminder that being a parent requires not only nurturing love but also the ability to see beyond our biases and apply critical thinking in challenging situations. I am determined to foster an environment where my son can learn the importance of honesty, accountability, and rational thinking – qualities that will serve him well throughout his life(Emotional Influence on Professionalism Journal Entry Example)
