Health Information Technology Integration: Electronic Medical Records – Week 8 Solution

This article provides a sample assignment solution about Health Information Technology Integration.

Assignment Content

The purpose of the Informatics Solution Proposal is to increase knowledge and ability with informatics and technology products for the health care workplace setting. You will review the functionality of various products and select one that best meets the needs of a health care setting.

During this project, you will identify a clinical or administrative issue and propose an informatics solution. In Week 5, you will synthesize your work into a proposal appropriate for the directors of a health care organization.

Identify an issue in a health care workplace that could be resolved by implementing an informatics or technology solution. The issue can be an administrative issue or a clinical issue.

Draft a 350-word letter or memo to a nursing administrator, informing them of the clinical or administrative problem, why it is a concern, and a request for permission to propose a solution. Support your letter with at least three peer-reviewed resources.

Format the letter according to APA guidelines for formal business correspondence.

Once you have written your memo/letter determine a category of informatics or technology that can solve the clinical or administrative issue you identified.

Compose a summary of the benefits of selecting a product from this category of technology or informatics system:

  • Identify a category of informatics or technology solution that may be appropriate for the identified workplace. Select a category of solution but not a specific product.
  • Provide a rationale for why this category of solution may help address the clinical or administrative problem.
  • Describe regulatory, legal, or ethical issues this category of solution may cause or resolve.

Format the summary as the following:

  • 350- to 525-word paper

Include a minimum of three peer-reviewed sources, and develop an APA-formatted reference page.

Health Information Technology Integration: Electronic Medical Records

The Health Information Technology Integration is a critical component in enhancing operational efficiency and quality service delivery for healthcare institutions. The approach involves integrating different elements of primary healthcare with information technologies. The purpose of health information technology integration is to introduce electronic data collection processes and management in healthcare facilities. Integrating necessary healthcare activities with technology will ensure effectiveness in the institutions’ operations.

In particular, the electronic medical records systems are ideal for healthcare organizations that seek to change their clinical documentation, scheduling, prescribing, and communication from the conventional approaches to an electronic framework. EMR systems enhance real-time access to patients’ information since it relies on electronic retrieval and patient data sharing among health providers (Kim et al., 2018).

EMR systems facilitate improved accessibility and information availability on a patient’s treatment and diagnosis information. The information contains the diagnosis, treatment history, healthcare plans, immunization detail, and tests. Besides, EMR systems provide healthcare institutions and service providers with the ideal information that enhances effective decision-making. The EMR systems’ final component is that they automate information flow in healthcare facilities, thus improving workflow (Porsdam et al. 2016).

Selecting a product from the EMR system will allow an organization to realize several benefits. The systems are known to enhance operational efficiencies, thereby allowing organizations to save on costs. Adopting EMR systems enhances healthcare organizations diagnostic procedures hence bettering patient outcomes (Saiod et al. 2017).

Similarly, an organization stands to benefit by improving coordination across the different departments and facilitating patient participation. Besides, EMR systems provide various forms of communication back up using digital storage technologies. It is, therefore, possible to recover lost information, facilitate effective communication and improve decision making speed in clinical settings (Longhurst et al., 2019). Moreover, using EMRs will enhance service quality in terms of service delivery speed as the facility will have real-time access to patients’ medical information.

Ideally, the organization prepares to face diverse ethical challenges that it may encounter from using EMR systems. A critical cause of ethical concern is the confidentiality of patient’s information. The fact that person identifiable health information is entered into the system necessitates appropriate measures should be adopted to safeguard the accessibility, availability and integrity of the data (Lee, 2017). This can be done through security breaches into the system. Galli (2020) also points out that ethical issues also arise when the organization faces interferences with service provision, thus violating the patient’s expectations during system implementations.

In conclusion, my organization can best benefit from the full adoption of EMR systems that will impact all aspects of the care process. The improved productivity, decreased costs, enhanced patient safety, and better patient outcomes will have a significant impact on the quality of care in the facility.
