On the other hand, CD refers to language, speech, and communication deficits (American Psychiatric Association, 2013). Deficits in speech affect sound, articulation, voice, resonance, and fluency, while language deficits affect communication systems’ form, function, and use. Moreover, communication deficits affect a child’s verbal and nonverbal relay of demeanor, ideas, and attitudes. I would employ both DSM5, standardized assessment tests, and input from a specialist to achieve a definitive diagnosis. I would first establish a list of activities and questions and appropriate standardized tests to engage the child or adolescent to determine if their symptoms meet the DSM5 diagnosis for ID or CD. (Screenings for Neurocognitive Issues Comprehensive Nursing Paper Example)

For ID, I would use DSM5 clinical assessments and the Stanford Binet child IQ test. The DSM5 diagnostic criteria to consider would be intellectual deficits such as reasoning, abstraction, planning, experience, and academic learning (Patel et al., 2020). Moreover, I would evaluate the child’s deficits in adaptive functioning such as communication skills, sociability, and independence across different environments through the help of teacher and parent assessments.(Screenings for Neurocognitive Issues Comprehensive Nursing Paper Example)

For CD, I would use DSM5 clinical assessment and input from a pediatric speech/language pathologist. The DSM5 CD diagnosis includes assessing deficits in speech, language, and communication abilities considering the child/adolescent’s culture and language context. An input from a speech/language pathologist would ascertain the diagnosis since they are trained on formal speech assessment. (Screenings for Neurocognitive Issues Comprehensive Nursing Paper Example)

Screenings for Neurocognitive Issues Comprehensive Nursing Paper Example

References

American Psychiatric Association.
