Why or why not? (Limitations of a Test)

The most appropriate approach is to allow the student to take the Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) medications as prescribed by the primary provider. The student has a history of ADHD and was already showing symptoms of inattention, forcing the primary provider to prescribe the drugs. In this case, the student’s health should precede academic tests. Barkley (2022) observes that taking such an approach is crucial in averting adverse effects of stopping ADHD medications, like the reappearance or worsening of ADHD symptoms like inattention (Limitations of a Test).

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)

Besides, stopping the medications would attract extra attention to the student, which may be expensive and time-consuming. Also, the student’s body may fail to effectively respond to the medications in the future, affecting their overall performance (Barkley, 2022). Based on this, it is evident that the consequences of failing to take the medications outweigh the benefits. Any decisions to stop the medications must be made with the assistance of the student’s primary care provider. Therefore, it is imperative to recommend that the student take the medications (Limitations of a Test).

Limitations

Taking the medications before the tests will alter the student’s experience and the results of the tests. For instance, it will put them in an advantaged position by enhancing their attention, concentration, and activity compared to other students (Arnold et al., 2022). Besides, the test results will be biased since they will not accurately reflect the student’s potential. Producing biased results downgrades the significance of such tests, making them irrelevant in assessing students’ progress (Jangmo et al., 2019) (Limitations of a Test).

For example, tests administered to assess student behaviors or social skills may produce good results that are not reproducible in cases where the student gets employment based on such skills. Moreover, it increases irregularities and moral defects among other students, who may opt for the same drugs to boost their performance. Such irregularities may discredit or lead to the discontinuation of such tests, affecting students’ overall performance (Limitations of a Test).

References

Arnold, L.
