Solution

Case Scenario

Walter Isaacson is a mental health researcher at the Bryce Hospital in Alabama. It is now two years since he was posted to the healthcare institution completing his degree in Doctor of Psychology from the University of Alabama in Birmingham. Isaacson is guided by his childhood passion for bringing positive contributions to society. In particular, he looks forward to finding solutions and lowering the different mental challenges people face. The desire to solve mental health issues made Isaacson decide to dedicate his stay at the Bryce Hospital to research.

Bryce perceives the encounter as worthy in allowing him to know the root causes of diverse forms of mental issues, risk factors, and the different ways to prevent or lower the disease’s prevalence. Also, Isaacson wants to come up with his studies. He does not want to be involved in situations where he is blamed for publication violation cases such as plagiarizing other people’s work or failing to credit the primary research authors.

Isaacson believes in using whatever means possible to attain his objective of solving the mental complications in society. According to Isaacson, the primary objective of any healthcare practitioner is to ensure their client’s wellbeing. For this reason, he prefers to use research methods that he views as likely to be rejected by the patients. His researches are designed in ways that allow patients to provide him with information that most will be reluctant to issue.

Isaacson views the retrieval of confidential but worthy information from people with a mental health condition as a difficult task. Failure to get ideal information from the patients, thus leads to misjudgments. Therefore, different means must be used regardless of patients’ knowledge, to get information whose sole purpose is to improve their health. For instance, Isaacson asks other medical staff about specific patients’ information without their patient knowledge.

He perceives staff with better relationships with other patients as the ideal source of information. Likewise, Isaacson tends to hide some facts of the data he collects from his patients. While patients find it a routine to be asked several questions on their health, they find discomfort with the extra amount of information Isaacson asks. The truth of the matter is that he gathers data for his different researches.

Isaacson’s methods have attracted much concern among the hospital’s management. Earlier last week, he was the topic of discussion at a board meeting debating conduct. The bone of contention involved Isaacson’s work and their impact on the medical profession and the hospital. While Isaacson pointed out that his works were meant for society’s betterment, the board ascertained that he violated psychologists’ ethical conduct.

Isaacson’s work was pointed out to contradict the Ethical Principles of Psychologists and Code of Conduct as set out by the American Psychological Association. Likewise, his acts were perceived to contradict requirements for “organizational members to engage, explore and define the moral dimensions of working and living together as a fundamental organizational change process (Newman & Fuqua, 2006).”

For instance, it was established that Isaacson had violated the Informed Consent to Research article of the APA ethical principles. The informed consent principle requires that researchers inform participants of the study’s purpose and seek their approval to participate in the study. According to APA, “Psychologists conducting intervention research involving the use of experimental treatments clarify to participants at the outset of the research” (APA, 2002).

However, this is not the case in Isaacson’s situation, where patients did not know they were part of the research. Likewise, Isaacson’s actions are perceived to violate the patient’s needs. According to Yuen et al. (2009), human service professionals should design their programs to align with patient needs.

Similarly, research is perceived as ethical when it respects the circumstances, values, needs, and welfare of research participants (Grady et al. 2005). Patient’s need for confidentiality and value may thus have been violated in Isaacson’s case. Likewise, the patients are not aware whether Isaacson will protect their identity in case he decides to publish his researches as there was no formal agreement to the study.

As it stands, Isaacson is in an ethical dilemma as he seeks answers to the different questions detailing his conduct as a medical practitioner. At what time does a healthcare practitioner need to promote the patient’s health amount to a violation of ethical standards? Can patients and research participants health be enhanced by following the laid down procedures where they may hold back information crucial their healing?
