The Learning Disabilities Association of America points out that about 2.3 million American students are diagnosed with learning disabilities, representing 35% of the students’ population (Learning Disabilities Association of America). Learning disabilities affect writing, reading, listening, reasoning, and speaking, leading to delayed communication, speech, and language development.

Communication disabilities are highlighted as complications and developmental delays that affect the child’s ability to comprehend, detect, or apply language and engage with others effectively. Communication disability is noticed in children when they show a relatively slow pace of communicating with people than their peers. Some of the indicators include not speaking at all, limited word choice for the child’s age, and challenges in taking directions or naming objects.

Communication disability begins as a developmental delay as the child goes through different stages of life. Ideally, each step is characterized by various communication milestones, with children reacting to sounds in the first six months. At 12 months, children become responsive to basic forms of spoken response and react to simple gestures, for instance, waving. If the child doesn’t respond to sounds and isn’t using gestures after 12 months, it imperative to test for communication development delays.

At 18 months, children can point at things they want and use gestures such as shaking the head to mean “no.” If the child can’t babble, imitate sounds, or has trouble understanding simple verbal requests, the child has communication delays. Children at 24 months can point at things when they are mentioned.

However, at 24 months, communication delays are observed when the child can imitate sounds but can’t produce words and phrases, say only some sounds or words repeatedly, and can’t use oral language to communicate for more than their immediate needs has an unusual tone of voice. At 36 months, children can state their first name, sex, and age. If the child finds it challenging to hold conversations stretching into three sentences, it is critical to conduct psychological and psychometric testing to determine the child’s thinking and reasoning abilities

The diseases may affect the quality of voice, thus making a person experience difficulties in communicating. Language disorders refer to communication challenges that interfere with people’s ability to express or understand what others say. Language disorders arise from slow developmental issues and damage to the central nervous system. The disability interferes with individuals’ intellectual capabilities, making it challenging for the child to learn in school, as information processing is adversely affected. The inability to process information mean the children do not understand the instructions relayed. Consequently, the child finds it hard to remain attentive in class or carry out activities that entail logic and reasoning, for instance, solving math.

There are different effective strategies for helping children with language disabilities. One such approach understands how a child communicates and develops the right framework to speak with them. Tools such as whiteboards can be used to formulate the child’s different kinds of communication means. The approach allows parents and teachers to communicate with children with language disorders since they know how they relay their communication.

Besides, getting rid of various forms of distractions is considered significant in enhancing communication among children with language disorders. The approach allows them to focus on instructions being given, thus understanding what is required of them. Moreover, children are exposed to social environments to enhance their social skills as they interact with other people (Lyons & Roulstone, 2018). They also benefit from the social learning of both verbal and non-verbal abilities.

In conclusion, learning disabilities in children are associated with communication disorders, speech, and language disorders. Learning disabilities adversely affect all the learning components, including writing, reading, listening, reasoning, and speaking. Communication disorders have been illustrated as either occurring in the form of language or speech disorders.
