The physician has to respect patient autonomy. In this case, James is a minor and the parents have the absolute power of making decisions for him. Mike decision to rely on faith alone and forego the temporary dialysis worsened James’ condition. It was not the right decision, but it was what the father wanted. James needs a kidney transplant, and Mike is again contemplating whether to allow Samuel to donate one of his kidneys to James or wait for God to work miracles. It is a matter between life and death, and the physician should intervene for James’ sake. The physician does not have to disrespect patient autonomy. He can employ other interventions like giving as much explanation as possible about the circumstance to enlighten Mike of the need of the transplant and the consequences if they decide to forego the procedure.

The physician should embrace Mike’s faith and explain to him that his works are a ministry and complement God’s work. Religious and cultural commitments significantly influence treatment and care preferences. The physician should consider inviting the opinions of the priest or other religious leaders to help Mike reason out the situation and select an option that would improve James’ quality of life. Mike is not doing things to harm James intentionally, but he is overlying on faith alone, and the Bible teaches that faith without action is dead. According to Orr (2003), it is ethically justified for physicians to continue with the life-saving procedure in such a situation.

The Bible depicts many instances of sickness to showcase God’s faithfulness and ability to heal. According to Shelly and Miller (2006), Christians perceive illness as a test of faith, and some think that sickness is a punishment for sin. Most Christians go with the first notion that sickness strengthens or weakens faith in God. In the Bible, Jobs’ story talks about how the devil inflicted pain and disease to Job in a test of his faith in God, and God rewarded his determination with more children and wealth. Some Christians view sickness and suffering as a result of the fallenness of the world. Most illnesses today are humanmade. Adam and Eve’s disobedience resulted in pain and suffering, and most Christians perceive sickness as part of life.

Some Christians associate medical interventions with scientism, which disputes the existence of God. However, others view medical intervention as God’s ministry. The Bible teaches that Christians should do well to others and care for the sick, which hastens their physical and spiritual healing. There are different faith dominions in Christianity, and others reject medical treatment considering it as a depiction of little faith. Medical interventions help with the healing process, and if they can restore someone’s health, they are right and a part of caring for the sick. Many churches, such as the Catholic Church have opened hospitals and community care centers to offer medical help to the public. The Bible does not rebuke doctors and medical treatment, and most views against medical interventions are personalized. There is no place God has ever been displeased with the doctors’ work and procedures that aim at restoring people’s health. Christians should not rely on faith alone in sickness and should take action by embracing medical interventions. Christians should view medical work as a ministry to do well to others and care for the sick.

As a Christian, Mike should remain faithful and hopeful and let God work through the physician. Most Christians believe that doctors provide treatment, but God heals. Relying on faith alone without taking action to restore James health can be life-threatening. The principle of beneficence requires loving and doing well to others. Non-maleficence requires showcasing mercy and not harming others through our actions or decisions. God expects Christians to love one another and avoid harmful acts. In this case, Mike needs to do what is best for James, which is accepting the kidney transplant. God gave people intelligence to use it to solve problems. Medical intervention reflects this intelligence, and Mike should view the transplant as God work via the physician to restore James health. The Bible teaches that God works through people. God gave his son and his servants the power to heal and restore disabilities. This narrative shows that God does not want us to suffer and works through doctors to heal the sick. Jesus acknowledged the work of the physicians: “It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick.”—Matthew 9:12.” (Health, n.d.).

A spiritual need assessment on Mike and any other person involved in this case would help the physician determine the impact of their spirituality on James’s medical care. The assessment would help determine if spiritual care: maintaining a compassionate presence, praying, Bible reading, and actively listening, is necessary. Sometimes, spiritual leaders such as priests in such a case would help make informed decisions that strike the right balance between faith and medical interventions. According to Shelly and Miller (2006), a Christian community and clergy would help Mike maintain a relationship with God, offering spiritual comfort, as the physician works on James.

A patient’s spiritual needs are vital in making medical decisions and interpreting life, sickness, and health (Saguil & Phelps, 2012). The need assessment would help identify Mike and the family sources of hope and meaning, spiritual practices, perception of God in light of sickness, and the impact of their spirituality on medical care and medical decisions. The interventions should facilitate physical and spiritual healing without disputing Mike’s spirituality and beliefs. Mike clearly needs guidance in decision making after him considering relying on faith alone for the second time. The physician should try to question Mike of what his son’s sickness means to him, and his rationale of Christianity and medical intervention. To build trust, the physician should invite a priest or chaplain to solve Mike’s uncertainties. Mike and the family should understand that choosing medical treatment does not show little faith but taking action to complement their faith.
