Hi Marilyn,

I agree with you that the red color is the practice environmental color of California, and it symbolizes practice restriction for Nurse Practitioners (N.P.’s). The red color means that physicians’ oversight is needed whenever the NPs are working (Poghosyan et al., 2017). Among the 12 states in the US that restrict NP’s practice, California is the only Western State with the red shade. In addition, the NP relies on the state board practice act for direction. However, Governor Gavin Newsome granted the NP’s Full Practice Authority (FPA) through bill AB-890 into the legislature. On Sept 29, 2020, the AB-890 bill received the Governor’s assent, and its effective date is January 2023, a move that will make California the 23rd country in the US to give NP’s FPA (California Board of Registered Nursing, 2021).  Hence, this will enable California to enjoy the benefits associated with FPA, just like other states like Maryland that exercise FPA. Some of these benefits are cost-saving, whereby FPA avoids unnecessary care, and streamlined care in which care delays due to NP’s consultant are minimized. The green color means that the state the NPs enjoys full practice. On the other hand, the yellow color symbolizes reduced practice where the NP’s exercise some authority but with decreased rights in some areas.(Assessing the State Practice Environment Map Comprehensive Nursing Essay Example)

The standardized procedures are the legal requirements for an NP to carry out medical practices. The development of these procedures must involve medicine, nursing, and an organized health care system. Due to this interdisciplinary collaboration in developing the standardized procedure, nurse practitioners portray accountability on various levels of their duties (Arifkhanova, 2017). Standardized procedures entail guidelines where some aim at customer protection guides the NPS on the specific activity and under what circumstance. Additionally, these guidelines help promote the standard of patient care, and they stand as legislation of services and serve as supervision and Agreement for the Physician Assistants. The standardized procedure in California offers guidelines but not care standards; as such, they are not meant to replace the NP’s clinical judgment.(Assessing the State Practice Environment Map Comprehensive Nursing Essay Example)

Hi Marilyne,

It is a matter of concern for us practising nurses that currently, your State, Florida, just like mine California comprises one of the 12 US states bearing a Code Red or categorized as a restrictive state for nurse practice. Georgia, Massachusetts, Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Tennessee are other states. Missouri, Michigan, Oklahoma, and Texas complete the list. According to Peterson (2017), restricted practice (herein taken to mean state practice and licensure laws that impose restrictions on NPs ability to take part in at least one element of NP practice) is a major impediment to the stated goals of the US healthcare system to meet the rising demands of primary healthcare through advanced training of nurses. Suffice it to say that as the healthcare subsector with the largest workforce, skilled nurses are at a vantage point to offer primary ad other levels of care to underserved populations. I also appreciate Florida’s deliberate step taken towards Full Practice authority in that in 2020; the State Legislature enacted a law that establishes additional training in diagnosis and pharmacology where NPs who have clocked three thousand or more hours of experience are not mandated to be under the supervision to operate in family medicine practice. All nurses practicing in any one of the states bearing a code Yellow (for reduced practice) or Code Red (Restricted Practice) should advocate for NPs to have full practice authority as is currently in 22 of the 54 states with full practice authority(Code Green). Reduced practice where NP only the ability to take part in at least one component of the Nurse Practitioner’s practice but regulated through a collaborative agreement with a health discipline outside nursing to offer patient care or restricted practice negate the four key messages of IOM  2010 report. Your description of the Florida Board of Nursing concisely points out how letting nurses practice at the full extent of their academic qualifications, having nurses achieve advanced education to propagate seamless education progress, where nurses are full partners to doctors, and other healthcare professionals would adequately capture the essence f effective workforce planning and the making of policies. Breaking down the systemic barriers to nursing practice would also enhance data collection and better information structure.(Assessing the State Practice Environment Map Comprehensive Nursing Essay Example)
